The bruise spreading from the bandage taped to the right side of her face had darkened spectacularly, red and purple splotches ringing around a plum-colored eye. She held an icepack against the side of her head with one hand and leaned on the door frame with the other.
"Mom?" Jazz, her voice thick with sleep and the lingering effects of the concussion. She was searching through her purse, turning the contents over and over, when the door opened from the inside. It took her three tries before she realized the ones she was trying to fit into the lock belonged to the RV. The next thing Maddie became aware of was fumbling with the keys at the front door. She didn't remember leaving the hospital, or the drive home. But the cruel thing was, it felt like the mistake was mine, for trusting you.
